1946 Remington Deluxe Model 5 Serial # B1311216 1946 Remington Deluxe Model 5 typewriter, Serial # B1311216 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1946 Remington Deluxe Model 5 typewriter. 2026-05-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1946 Remington Deluxe Model 5 Serial # B1311216 No. 14 in my collection is a 2nd Remington Deluxe Model 5 (or De Luxe Model 5?). This one is in a bit rougher shape than my other one, and is about a year older. There's something wrong with the left shift, the left shift lock is busted, and some of the keys rest higher than others. The 8 also sticks in an odd way. However, this one has the carriage lock intact, where it's broken on my other, better one.

Otherwise, there seems to be no difference between the two, other than being built 1 year apart. The case also seems to be the same.

I have since messed around with it. I got the 8 working properly - the sticking and the excessive height at rest were due to a bent linkage I managed to bend back. I think I isolated the left shift problem to a rusty pivot, which just refused to free up. I used a rubber band to improve the return, and moving a screw from another cosmetic part, I was able to replace the one that was missing on the tab that the shift lock engages. These weren't pretty fixes, but the typewriter now functions correctly.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
