Description:
I bought this Hermes Media in Switzerland and I shipped it to California with other machines. When it arrived, the drawband was stuck around the spring box. Luckily, nothing else was damaged in transit.
I gave this machine the usual treatment, including compressed air, mineral spirits, removing, cleaning and polishing all body panels, etc. In addition:
- I fixed the right platen knob which had broken and had been put back together incorrectly.
- I also redid all the soundproofing felt inside the machine, as it was quite gross.
- I did some very minor paint touch-ups with a black pen.
- I touched up some key legends that were damaged.
I really like the gloss black color of this machine. The "Hermes Media" in front is beautiful, and so are the decals in the back. The machine also has a riveted vendor tag in the back, which says "Hans Kyburz - Solothurn + Grenchen". It's quite a classy tag which fits really well.
The ribbon covers have marks of use and could be repainted at a later time. It bears marks of earlier touch-ups. Other than that, the paint of the machine is almost perfect on the sides and back, with a few traces of use in front.
The machine types really well. This being a Media (as opposed to a regular 2000), it doesn't have touch control or a tabulator.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes Media 2000 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes Media 2000 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
