Description:
A very nicely built portable machine by Olympia. Richard Polt's blog post gives an excellent overview. What is most interesting about this specimen is that for a "simplified machine" (VA) it's not actually simplifed. It has TWO platen knobs AND this is one of the less common models that also comes with a user settable Tab function. It's a little confusing at first. But, there is a lever in the rear of the machine which is put to the left to set tabs and then flipped over to the left to clear them/use them in conjunction with the Tab Setz and TAB buttons. Also sports a nifty ribbon cover that folds forward on hinges.

A lover of the written word, I was bitten by the typewriter bug at the beginning of 2019 when I embarked on a Joyful Odyssey to track down a vintage Olympia SM 7/8/9, (I didn't know the model number at the time) that my mother had owned and which I had used to type my college applications in the late 1980's. I have acquired quite a number since, and have enjoyed learning about the history, mechanics, and true variety of these machines.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Kappel VA on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Kappel Serial Number page and the Kappel VA By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
