1942 Underwood S Serial # S5552082-12 1942 Underwood S typewriter, Serial # S5552082-12 Crystal Carney's 1942 Underwood S typewriter. 2022-01-23 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Crystal Carney: 1942 Underwood S Serial # S5552082-12 Got this from a Goodwill auction. Spacebar is broken and everything is sluggish and frozen, but otherwise looks to be in good condition.

Update: After a thorough cleaning I’ve got everything moving although some keys are still sluggish. There’s some minor rust inside that might be slowing things down.
I hadn’t noticed before, a special mathematical key in an otherwise standard keyboard layout. I’m thinking maybe it was special ordered.

I reconstructed the right knob after it was broken in shipping. I’m missing a few small fragments that I might fill for appearances.

I carved a temporary foot out of cork and it works well to keep it stable. I also replaced layers of felt between the rubber feet and metal caps on all feet, further stabilizing it.

I’m a mother, writer, editor, cosplayer, knitter, martial artist, reader, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, granddaughter, poet, black sheep, college graduate, artist, gamer, big damn browncoat, and typewriter tinkerer. There's little more satisfying than finding a typewriter in bad shape and bringing her back to life.
