Description:
My daily driver. This thing is built like a tank. Weighs nearly 40 lbs, significantly heavier than my KMG from 1949.
I found this gem on fb marketplace in my early days of collecting. I drove 2 hours away and paid $50. It was intact and it typed (faint ink left on the black silk ribbon) but was gummed up from years of having been abandoned in a closet. After six months of admiring it while acquiring many other machines, I finally took this to Gramercy Typewriter in NYC for an overhaul including a new platen. They did a beautiful job.
Everything now works swimmingly. The magic margins are springy and snappy. The ribbon reverse (my favorite KMM feature) works like a charm and I love seeing it switch before my eyes as I write away.
Gramercy had outfitted it with an all black nylon ribbon but I later switched it out for a silk black/red from Ribbons Unlimited.
There is something special about this model of machine. If you want to learn all about it, check out Joe Van Cleave's Youtube video review. It's delightful and informative.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal KMM on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal KMM By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
