1942 L.C. Smith Super-Speed Serial # 1A1770896-18 1942 L.C. Smith Super-Speed typewriter, Serial # 1A1770896-18 Lupo Cuore's 1942 L.C. Smith Super-Speed typewriter. 2022-08-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Lupo Cuore: 1942 L.C. Smith Super-Speed Serial # 1A1770896-18 As the serial number suffix denotes, this is an 18-inch carriage example of this model, built during the first year the USA was actively fighting in WW2. Not a military model, the elite typeface and wide carriage suggests use by accounting as they need the wide carriage and small type for spreadsheets (the other wide carriages I have with elite are known to have been used by accountants). Another SGW acquisition, the drawstrap was disconnected when I got it (and when it shipped, no doubt) so I had to take off the carriage to retrieve it. It still needs some work underneath: there are linkage issues with the tabulator, backspace and space bar - broken links, missing springs, etc. And though I've given it a quick cleaning, it needs a deeper flush - pretty heavy to type on at the moment, though not too awful. I put it under "Super-Speed" instead of "Super Speed" because even on the typewriters that are listed under "Super Speed" the hyphen is clearly visible.

Been used enough that the drawband has left tracks in the paint visible when glare is present.

Rear view. The lid on the back is spring loaded to stay in place, just needed a bit of a shift.

This design is all business but they still found it possible to put some smooth side stripes in the paint.

Someone took the hinges for the lid off and never replaced them, and so the lid was tilting back enough for the typebars to hit it. I've put a stopgap in place - some blocks on the inside of the lid - to keep that from happening. Maybe at some point I'll come across a parts machine.

New collector with a penchant for offbeat models/brands and, conversely, the mundane models many overlook, if I have a personal connection or just find them interesting. Finding that collecting typewriters is like eating potato chips, you can't have just one! Also restorer of mechanical calcs, Vintage audio, and vintage computers.
