1941 Underwood S Serial # S5471273-14 1941 Underwood S typewriter, Serial # S5471273-14 James Grooms's 1941 Underwood S typewriter. 2025-09-23 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1941 Underwood S Serial # S5471273-14 The only thing that saved this from being a parts machine was those 10 tabulator keys. There was a mouse nest in the back of it. A dozen keys wouldn't return to the rest from the piss induced rust. The lever and left side margin set were broken. The tension adjuster underneath was broken. The feet were mostly gone. The platen and variable were seized. Once I started, I then found the left side carriage track threaded spot in the frame was broken. Someone had used a right-side carriage stop L cut down. This was wedged into place and provided something for the screw to grab. I made a new one and ground it to fit better, so it gets a bit more purchase on the frame. Of course, after taking the margin mechanism completely apart to replace the slider, the margin setup needed to be sorted out. Such a weak design.

I would say it was dropped, and this broke the frame. The paper release lever linkage was brazed as well. Then after this, something fell on it and broke the return lever and slider off. When this happened it pushed the margin trigger tab in the front carriage, so when it contacted the margin, it would not trip it. Whew!!!

Fortunately, the typebars are straight and it produces a good impression.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood S on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood S By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
