Description:
A friend retrieved this and a Remington Portable from an abandoned building downtown. It works OK and is worth fixing the rest of the way. Impressively massive on a desk and still very mechanical despite having more shrouding than earlier models.
The degree sign is the only unusual symbol on the keyboard. The Shift Lock is on the right side only.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood S on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood S By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
