Description:
The Varsity is a minimalistic typewriter, no doubt about that. Here is what you won't find:
- a color selector
- a right margin stop
- a tabulator
- a paper guide
Or, in fact, any other fancy feature.
It is cute in its own way. It suffers a little by being carriage-shifted, which makes it a little more tiring to use compared to basket-shifted machines.
This machine types exceptionally cleanly. Somebody noted that the "a" is a little bit off.
The machine is in great condition. The trim around the ribbon cover is dull, however. I don't know if it used to be nicely nickeled or chromed, of if the dull finish was original.
I found this machine locally from a man who had read Tom Hanks's "Uncommon Type: Some Stories".

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal Varsity on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal Varsity By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
