1940 Royal KMM Serial # KMM-2673352 1940 Royal KMM typewriter, Serial # KMM-2673352 Wayne Bouchard's 1940 Royal KMM typewriter. 2025-06-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Wayne Bouchard: 1940 Royal KMM Serial # KMM-2673352 Here is a Royal KMM typewriter. The "MM" stands for Magic Margin, a feature whose desirability and utility divides the typewriter community sharply. Some love it, some absolutely hate it. Nevertheless, Royal made it a signature feature for all of its typewriters until the end of independent production. This particular typewriter is a Pica unit (10 pitch, 6 LPI) and carries the standard width carriage. The KHM/KMM was the next generation following the Royal 10 and represents a significant improvement. While the mechanism didn't change a great deal, the action feels so much better and the typewriter also added a touch control that, while it works, doesn't actually change things that much, but, with the rotary wheel instead of the lever most use, does feel better during adjustment. This typewriter could be found being used even 40+ years later in some areas, since it was just built to last.

Interestingly, this typewriter came to me with plastic spools. I have never seen plastic spools of the Royal design, but they certainly do the job!

Hard to see, but each of these type bars bears s "P", designating this as a Pica unit (10 pitch, 6LPI)

Note the springs around the trip levers. I have no idea why Royal stuck with this setup for so long when there were better systems out there that were no longer under patent, but that's how they chose to do things. Each of these is attached to a T lever which connects to both the key lever. and the type bar.

Collector of several things, including typewriters, slide rules, and mechanical calculators.
Started collecting typewriters in 2023 with a Royal HHE like the one I did my first book report on when I was in school and using my dad's old typewriter.
