1940 Remington Remette Serial # CR263840 1940 Remington Remette typewriter, Serial # CR263840 David Karoly's 1940 Remington Remette typewriter. 2024-01-09 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of David Karoly: 1940 Remington Remette Serial # CR263840 Acquired this Remette from a local Marketplace seller; it is very clean. Wonder if they gave up on it. The problem was it did not space the carriage in lower case. It did work in upper case and the space bar worked. If a shift key was held down just slightly then lower case worked.

Lying on the floor with its back feet on the desk and the rest of it hanging over the edge I observed it in action with a flashlight. My finger slipped and pushed the space bar up. Oh great, I think, now another thing to fix and its my fault. So I get it up on the desk and now the lower case spaces until I push the spacebar at which point I realize the spacebar is hanging up on the front frame because the frame is bent/curved inwards ever so slightly. So I set up a makeshift frame straightening jig in my wood shop and straightened as far as I dared. It has been working great ever since.

It is an odd type feel, to say the least. Kind of fun to watch. Okay for a letter here and there but wouldn't want to use it for serious production writing. I put something heavy on the paper between the platen and the paper table to improve its imprint. It is very bare bones, lacking a lot of the usual features. No bell, no linelock (I don't use the right margin), no color selector, only has the right knob, no carriage lock, no touch selector, no paper bail, no paper fingers. It is small and lightweight and well built by Remington.

I started with 2 Monroe calculating machines then in January 2023 I used my Christmas money to buy a 1936 L.C. Smith and Corona, Corona Standard portable. Since then have acquired more typewriters. Also have 2 Engineers Transits (surveying instruments), a K+E Foresters staff compass, and 4 slide rules. Typewriters as a hobby has been more affordable than antique surveying instruments anre and they are easier to obtain.
