1940 Remington Deluxe Noiseless Serial # N1117128 1940 Remington Deluxe Noiseless typewriter, Serial # N1117128 Zigmund Hostutler's 1940 Remington Deluxe Noiseless typewriter. 2025-04-19 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Zigmund Hostutler: 1940 Remington Deluxe Noiseless Serial # N1117128 Acquired Summer of 2019. Pica. Photos ca. 2019.

I had been looking for a Noiseless for some time when this one was listed online in 2019. This Deluxe Noiseless originally hails from the Midwest. It only needed a light cleaning and was in excellent condition. A Noiseless truly is much quieter than a traditional front-stroke portable, and this machine was well-suited for travel.

What kept me from fully enjoying this typewriter was the poor print quality, the feel of the keystroke and carriage return, sluggish shifting, and a persistent issue with ink smearing under every line of text. Gradually, I used it less and less. Eventually, it was rehomed. That said, every once in a while, I do miss it. Perhaps one day I'll find another that's more to my liking.

According to the serial number database, this machine was one of the first 10,000 built of the new "1941 line" Noiselesses in July 1940. It's visually set apart from earlier Deluxes by new plastic ribbon spool caps, keys ringed with black paint, new platen knobs, and a redesigned carriage return lever.

Left my collection in the summer of 2022.
