1938 Urania 8 Serial # 223332 1938 Urania 8 typewriter, Serial # 223332 Dimitris Nikou's 1938 Urania 8 typewriter. 2021-01-25 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Dimitris Nikou: 1938 Urania 8 Serial # 223332 Found at an antique shop, this pre WW2 Urania Model 8 is in great shape. The frame paint and decals are nice and clean, except of the one on the front of the keyboard, which was covered at some point with paint. It has a Greek AZERTY keyboard, round glass keys, decimal tab keys with red color ring, so beautiful! Some keys look different, like they were handwritten, maybe a customer request - see the last picture. On the front there is a very nice detachable plate with the Urania logo and the name of the general representative company in Athens.

Comparing this machine with the other one that is here on TWDB, I can see that two keys are missing from the front, right and left of the logo plate, the right functions as margin release and the left I am not sure, probably something for the tabulator. Everything seems to work fine, especially after the first cleaning. I only have two problems. The first (and most important) is that I cannot turn the platen. No matter what I do, the platen is not moving. The second problem, a minor one, for me, is that the backspace key is not working and it feels kind of loose. Overall this Urania is a great, strong and heavy machine with beautiful classic standard desktop design of the era.
