My fascination with typewriters started when I picked up an Underwood No. 1 for $25 at a yard sale. I've picked up several more since then, including a Smith Corona Sterling (Maroon) from the 1930's, a Royal No. 10 from the 20's, a Royal Quiet De Luxe from the 50's, and an IBM Selectric (what a beast!). I've been learning to repair them bit by bit and pick up new ones whenever the right opportunity arises, sometimes selling them on eBay after my initial crush diminishes.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Sterling on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Sterling By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
