1938 Remington Model 5 Streamline Serial # B26880 1938 Remington Model 5 Streamline typewriter, Serial # B26880 Randall Lyon's 1938 Remington Model 5 Streamline typewriter. 2026-02-03 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Randall Lyon: 1938 Remington Model 5 Streamline Serial # B26880 Found on Ebay, January 2026. I saw one in Chelsea, MI at an antique shop that I liked, but $150 FIRM was out of my range. This one has a broken draw band and cracked feet, but $25 +shipping was more my style. Thank God the seller knew how to ship a typewriter and it came safely packed.

The serial number puts it in the first 2000 Streamliner machines made with the touch control in July of 1938. At $49.50, it would have been the equivalent of a little over $1100 today (2026). I doubt any modern $1100 computer will be around in 2114, but I could almost guarantee this little machine, if taken care of, could still be typing for my great-grandchildren then.

I am saving the work on this for the spring, but it looks like it will be a good typer with the investment of a new draw band, new feet, a type slug cleaning, and a bit of a rinse with mineral spirits. It has no sticky keys and the escapement works fine with some manual pressure on the carriage in lieu of the draw band. The platen is hard as a diamond and the rollers need replacing. I have some vacuum line that could be a good substitute for the rollers. I may use heat shrink until I am able to afford platen service from JJ Short.

It has a pica typeface, and once it gets cleaned up and the ribbon is replaced, I will post a shot of the type.
