1938 Diplomat 2 Serial # 179900 1938 Diplomat 2 typewriter, Serial # 179900 Javier Vazquez del Olmo's 1938 Diplomat 2 typewriter. 2019-09-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Javier Vazquez del Olmo: 1938 Diplomat 2 Serial # 179900 This is a very nice typewriter, one can't expect less from a rebranded Olympia.

For some reason (Carl H explains it in the page of his 1936 Diplomat Elite, see links), Olympia sold Olympias and office material dealers had to sell rebranded Diplomats. Why? I don't get it. It only confuses the customers. Diplomat sold the 1 (which was an Olympia 8), the 2 and the Elite. I fail to see the difference between the Diplomat 2 and the Elite, the same way I don't fully get the difference between Olympia Simplex, Elite and Progress. At least I get the Robust is the military version.

But back to this specimen. Good condition, so shiny it looks horrible when I try to take photos and I get reflected on the surface. Works fine, the ribbon has some punch in it... but there's always a certain something. The feed rollers are a bit damaged and from time to time you have to give the paper a hand to advance. Irritating, so I'll have to try something. At least feed rollers can be reparied... I hope.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.

A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
