Description:
The SSS was manufacutered from 37-39. There are very few ads and those don't reveal much. I am going to compare this one to a Super Speed. There's an interesting 1939 typewriter review that states: "silencing effect of this machine, it is thought, may not be permanent."
What could this be other than a super soft platen?
This example came to me from the daughter of the original owner. I'd say he aquired it from his government employment days. It has an ID number on the upper left corner of the front panel. As well, there is evidence there was a tag on the right rear of the frame. I have never seen a machine with so many erasure bits in it. The pile on top of the lower segment was an inch deep.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the L.C. Smith Silent Super Speed on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the L.C. Smith Serial Number page and the L.C. Smith Silent Super Speed By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
