1937 Imperial 50 Serial # O 2361 1937 Imperial 50 typewriter, Serial # O 2361 Jerry Himes's 1937 Imperial 50 typewriter. 2024-10-02 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Jerry Himes: 1937 Imperial 50 Serial # O 2361 An impressive looking British standard typewriter. In a nice aesthetic condition and it types well enough, but the platen is rock hard and partly cracked. The paper bail rollers are also in need of changing, as one is flat and one is otherwise stuck. The worst problem is that the right side platen handle/rod is slightly crooked, and it has been so for a while, as rotating it has caused grooves in the metal rod. It works, but if you try to rotate the platen towards you, the otherwise handy piece which keeps the right side of the platen in place starts to open by itself thanks to the uneven groove. The platen doesn't rotate perfectly level, but the right side keeps rising and lowering slightly as well. Not sure if this can be fixed even if the right side would be straightened because the grooves might still cause problems, so the machine might need a new platen piece altogether. Still works nicely as an interactive decoration piece though.

I have been looking for ways to spend less time on electronic devices, and because of this I started doing my writing and translation work with pens and pencils, and now on typewriters as well. I have noticed that adding typewriters to the process has been beneficial to the quality of the text, plus it's just more fun this way.

I have started selling and giving away some of my machines now that I have figured out which ones I want to keep. Some people have asked me for working typewriters, so I have been on the lookout for machines purely for that purpose as well. As fun and instructive as it has been, soon it is time to finish this collecting and tinkering and move back to my original intention: writing. I hope.
