Description:
The rare and elusive Corona Special Flat top typewriter. Only one year of manufacture: 1936. Beautiful deep red front panel with gold 'Corona Special' decal and piano gloss black body. A sterling silver crown is inlaid into the top of the lid. There appear to be several other model differences between the Special, and the three other Corona flat top models (the Sterling, Silent, and Standard). First, the chromed touch selector is available on the exterior left side panel. Two, the side panels have no stamped depressions: they are flat (this is a feature in earlier year models). Thirdly, the rear paper table (no decal) has a chromed adjustable sliding paper guide inset (pictured below). Fourth, instead of two adjustable metal paper fingers that appear standard with all other flat top models, the carriage includes a unique, fully adjustable paper bail with two rubber rollers and a control lever on the right. Lastly, the knobs have the select, finely graded reeding found only on the 1938 and later Speedline Sterling models (reeding being the ridges along the edge of the knob). The keys are the 'cupped' option found on the higher end sterling and silent. Altogether, a very smooth and enjoyable typer with some unique and cosmetically pleasing features. Found at the Seattle Goodwill in rough shape and reconditioned by me.
