Description:
Richard Polt writes that the serial number records for Underwood Noiseless 77s are "confusing and incomplete", but based on the sequence of numbers already logged, I am assuming that mine is a 1935 model. My primary interest in this machine stems from my curiosity regarding its (and the Remington Noiseless Model 7's) "kissing" typing action.
While I do find that this gives these typewriters an instantly identifiable audio signature (more of a "chuff" than a "clack"), I would not be the first to note that they're more "slightly more quiet" than "noiseless". Regardless, it is a pleasant machine to type on, though perhaps a little stiff at times. But, not sure if that is an issue specific to my machine, or the result of its design.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Noiseless 77 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Noiseless 77 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
