1935 Olympia Filia Serial # 31544 1935 Olympia Filia typewriter, Serial # 31544 Brian Decker's 1935 Olympia Filia typewriter. 2026-04-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brian Decker: 1935 Olympia Filia Serial # 31544 2026 APR 18, Original Gallery Creation. There is a seller on eBay, "summergirl_96_5", who has multiple typewriters listed with "Buy It Now" and "Make An Offer" options. I had been eyeballing a Remington Porto-Rite of the Remington Portable 3 variety for a while, when I noticed her listing for this Olympia Filia. This is not uncommon in Europe, but it is less common to find for sale in the USA. The seller is based in the Bluffton, OH area, and she had this machine listed for $240. I offered $160, and she accepted. Then later, because the case does not latch and it needs a new ribbon, she offered a further discount of $20, so my total came to $140 for the machine, plus $31.30 for shipping.

This is the earlier "A" model. I had a heck of a time finding the serial number, even after removing the ribbon cover, because it is thickly coated with dust. The first number I found, "598", was on the carriage under the platen, and I was excited to think it might be such a low serial number. However, after some cleaning the dust away with bore cleaner, S/N 31544 emerged above the type basket to the right. I will create a typing sample later after a substantial clean & lube session. This machine needs it, but overall it has pretty good decals and not too much rust, so it has a lot of potential to be an attractive and usable piece.

Typewriter with case. The machine is supposed to bolt to the case. Unfortunately, both mounting screws are missing, and one of the threaded rod inserts is also missing. It seems a key (also missing) is needed to latch the case.

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008.

In late 2024, I started up again, working on my machines and having some of them serviced professionally by New England Typewriter (NET) LLC (Merrimack, NH), until they closed their doors in December of 2025. Since mid-2025, I have been adding to my collection again, first with a Hermes 3000 purchase from NET, then with various auctions and purchases on eBay, when I find something that catches my eye.
