Description:
I got this 1932 Merz Universal (3) from a fellow collector in Baltimore, MD, in February 2023. I've been working on it for a month now, since it is gummed-up worse than all but maybe 5 others typewriters I've had. I've flushed it out dozens and dozens of times, and yet congealed gunk still comes out. Maybe by May, the keys at the edges (Q, A ... +, Ă) will free up as much as the ones in the middle of the keyboard have. But good lord, what an interesting machine. As I said to a friend, it is like the Germans wanted to build a compact Royal 5 flatbed with a detachable, Underwood-style carriage, and put it all in a portable. Neat... but it still irks me that the feet aren't the lowest part of the machine.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Merz Universal on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Merz Serial Number page and the Merz Universal By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
