1931 Remington Portable 3 Serial # V384784 1931 Remington Portable 3 typewriter, Serial # V384784 Julian Walkner's 1931 Remington Portable 3 typewriter. 2022-03-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Julian Walkner: 1931 Remington Portable 3 Serial # V384784 This Remington Portable No.3 popped up on ebay and I was lucky enough to spot it first. The seller from upstate New York is obviously an early riser (good for me here in Europe) He had typed a few letters and since I only collect typewriters with different typefaces I knew immediately that this is a very special typeface. After some research, it was clear that it is the "Remington Typewriter" typeface designed by Frederic W. Goudy in 1927.
What I know so far - sorry to have to quote Wikipedia, but I don't have the books to check the original sources:

„Remington Typewriter (1927, Lanston Monotype) Though intended to be used on Remington typewriters, it was eventually picked up by Monotype. An attempt to avoid the feeling of unevenness of monospaced typefaces (which tend to make letters like 'i' seem too wide and 'W' too squashed) through creating an italic design. Goudy wrote that although he was paid well for the design, he did not know if it had ever been used by Remington.“

There’s a digital font based on this design and Luc Devroye has a “non digital" image of this typeface on his homepage, but to me this image looks like a tracing draft written with a fountain pen and the spacing is wider than the spacing on the Remington, which is 12 cpi.
A few days ago I found a letter with that typeface written by Marlene Dietrich. Apparently she had a Remington.

The typewriter was just dusty and works like a charm. The platen is rock hard and should be replaced. There is a small sticker on the case with the previous owner's name. ?ary E. Blood. Mary Blood? :-)
I researched the address on the sticker: Apartment building in Manhattan. East Side.

My first typewriter had a Script typeface. The second machine was a Graphika with the Cassandre typeface.
I quickly discovered my interest in different typefaces, so I focused my collection on them.
Currently I can choose from 36 different typefaces.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable 3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable 3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
