1930 L.C. Smith 8 Secretarial Serial # 956971G 10 1930 L.C. Smith 8 Secretarial typewriter, Serial # 956971G 10 Julian Zadorozny's 1930 L.C. Smith 8 Secretarial typewriter. 2025-08-14 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Julian Zadorozny: 1930 L.C. Smith 8 Secretarial Serial # 956971G 10 This 1930 L.C. Smith Secretarial is a model No. 8 and types with such a wonderful smoothness, you’d think it was brand new. This machine celebrates its 95th birthday, and I couldn’t be happier to have it in my collection. Sitting in my coffee shop, everyone is welcome to type on this fantastic machine.

This L.C. Smith was gifted to me by a customer who knew of my love of manual typewriters. His aunt stored it for years, and when she died, he tried to find someone who could have some use for the typewriter. The service was done by Toronto Dominion Business Machines. The platen can be removed. I believe the 10ā€ platen sits inside this machine. This L.C. Smith was built for heavy and long typing. A wonderful piece.

A side note is an odd function I’ve never seen before is a small wheel on the right side, closest to the line space lever, that is used as a line space regulator. Built in Syracuse NY from steel, metal, and nickel this machine is heavy and will most likely help creative minds for another 95 years.

I purchased my first typewriter in 2000: Brother Pro-Line 707 built in 1969.
I wrote eight hours a day, seven days a week on that tiny machine. I wrote my first unpublished novel and hundreds of short stories on the Brother.
In 2020 I decided to purchase my second typewriter. At ten and counting, I still use and collect these amazing tools for writing.
