Description:
Green is my favorite color, and this green-on-green beauty stole my heart. I like the whole premise of these brightly colored Porto-Rite machines, made by Remmington and sold through Sears for about $55 - bringing a fun pop of color and pizzaz into the homes and offices of the American public.
I treated myself to this beauty after another collector had cleaned and tuned it up. I am delighted to report that it is fully functional and a delight to use. The sound of the machine is a confident, decisive 'click' - bold, but not angry. It even has a nostalgic smell to it - evocative of pencil shavings and machine oil.
The pop-up mechanism that elevates the keys works perfectly and is satisfying to pull out and slide into place.
This machine came with its protective case and I aspire to protect it and get it safely past its 100th birthday.
There seems to be confusion about the correct dating of these early Porto-Rite beauties - I think this is pre-1932, probably 1928 or 1929. I'd love to hear what others think.
I love this typewriter.

I collect a variety of mechanical marvels including accordions, pump organs, and typewriters. In addition to collecting, I enjoy cleaning the machines and learning to perform basic repairs.
My typewriter collection began with a 1950s-era Underwood DeLuxe, purchased in the 1990s. Several decades passed before the typewriter bug bit again. Now I live surrounded by a small army of manual machines, including a Blickenderfer No. 7, a tiny 3 bank Underwood (1923), a Smith-Corona Clipper, a handful of Remingtons, and others.
Typewriters let me commune with the memory of my mother. Mum was an amazing typist - a legal secretary at a white-shoe NYC law firm who could accurately type over 100 wpm. Later in life, she taught middle school - many subjects - but typing was her favorite. Unlike teaching English, there was no pile of unpaid papers to grade. Prior to the advent of word processors, her last typewriter was a hulking beast of an IBM Selectric.
