1929 Remington Portable 2 Serial # V233626 1929 Remington Portable 2 typewriter, Serial # V233626 Daniel Burgoyne's 1929 Remington Portable 2 typewriter. 2023-07-05 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Daniel Burgoyne: 1929 Remington Portable 2 Serial # V233626 Found in an antique shop in a small town outside of Ottawa, Canada.

Crinkle paint finish with a decal on the right hand side only. Pica 10 cpi type pitch.

As documented by Richard Polt on his Remington Portables page (link below) these late models 2 were made in the U.S.A., for the European market. This machine has German and French diacritics. That's not all. The dead key for accents grave and circonflexe must be typed AFTER the vowel it goes onto. The standard approach is to press the dead key BEFORE typing the vowel.

The Y and Z type slugs and key tops were seemingly swapped around to make the keyboard a QWERTY layout, as evidenced by the brass shim on the Z type slug, a signature of a modification after fabrication. Also, the keytop rings for Z and W are mangled, unlike the rest of the keytop rings. Finally, an identical machine owned by by R. Lehmann in Germany, has a QWERTZ layout.

This late Portable 2 also has improved features thst are very convenient for the typist: a paper bail and two folding paper rests, something that my 1940 Remington Deluxe Model 5 doesn't even have. Strangely. however, this machine is missing a right-hand side carriage release lever, while two holes are present precisely at the location on the rack where a lever would be riveted. Was is removed or, was it not installed by error at the manufacture???

Showing a little bit of the wooden platen core on the rightmost side. This platen rubber has obviously been changed since 1929 as it is soft enough to type on. The plating on the little brass ball end of the paper release lever has worn from years of use.

Bonjour! I am from the region of Montreal, Quebec and moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992.

Amateur watchmaker and machinist, I love anything mechanical, hydraulic or electric. I have restored American and Canadian clocks and small lathes, milling machines and a jig bore.

Most of my typewriters have French Canadian QWERTY keyboards, with some exception for rare finds.
