Having a lot of trouble determining the model and year due to the unidentifiable prefix on this model... but I have a theory....
I think the guts of this machine was leftover, and the newer shell was added later. The "CM" prefix could have something to do with "Canada Made".
The history as it was told to me... For Christmas, in 1939, Marjorie and her brother Ken were given this typewriter by their parents. As a junior at a Battle Creek, Michigan high school, she also used this typewriter all through college and took it with her to Honduras, Central America, where she and her husband carried on missionary work. She typed many letters to family and supporters to this wonderful machine.

"I was born in a crossfire hurricane"...
A professor in college gave me the gift and appreciation of the letter form.
Typewriters are just little "print shops" for me.
I have an MFA in 3D Digital Sculpture.
I no longer mold young minds, by teaching art to high school students, everyday is a safari now...
In my spare time I own and operate an equal opportunity rescue shelter for all makes and models of typewriters that have been abandoned in the bottoms of closets.
No matter how many typewriters I am fortunate to be able to collect, my collection will not be as nice as Herman's...
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal P on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal P By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
