1927 Remington Portable Serial # NL 75171 1927 Remington Portable typewriter, Serial # NL 75171 Zigmund Hostutler's 1927 Remington Portable typewriter. 2024-09-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Zigmund Hostutler: 1927 Remington Portable Serial # NL 75171 Acquired January 2018. Pica, custom keyboard layout.

This typewriter was one of my first online purchases. What immediately catches oneā€™s attention in person is the case: it is plastered with old steamship labels. Two from the Cunard White Star Line, two from the Canadian Pacific Line, and one from the Netherland Line (ā€œN.V. Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederlandā€).

I donā€™t have many details about who the lady who owned this typewriter was or when she went on her adventure. But what I do know is she traveled aboard the SS Empress of Canada and returned from England aboard the RMS Queen Mary on October 18, 1947. She traveled in First Class. The Cunard label says ā€œStateroom Baggageā€ -indicating she wanted her typewriter in her cabin to use it.

Additionally, this Remington includes a couple of uncommon features. The keyboard is a custom job, including a 1, a British pound sign, and an asterisk. The pound sign (#) is missing. The custom typeslugs bear the same foundry markings and comparable soldering work to the rest of the keyboard. Likely was ordered custom from Remington. Finally, the platen features card-holding prongs. The platen was recovered in 2018 by J. J. Short.

Been enjoying the hobby since 2015; finally getting around to sharing my collection digitally. I only keep the typewriters I use and enjoy the most, so check out my sightings to see all the machines that came and went.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
