1923 Remington Portable Serial # NV32509 1923 Remington Portable typewriter, Serial # NV32509 Suzanne LaPierre's 1923 Remington Portable typewriter. 2025-02-27 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Suzanne LaPierre: 1923 Remington Portable Serial # NV32509 This is the first truly antique typewriter in my collection. I purchased it at Old Glory Antique Marketplace near Frederick, Maryland. The price was reasonable ($79), but the owner had a sale of 25% off everything in his booth, so that made it a no-brainer - into the trunk you go! All parts seem to work just fine - drumroll please - "IT JUST NEEDS A NEW RIBBON!" I haven't had a chance to fully clean and polish it yet, so stay tuned for better photos. I love the design of this machine. The pop-up keys are the coolest. Funny note, I had seen it before, but I thought the left knob was missing so that's one reason I passed it by - turns out this machine was not made with a left platen knob. On this model there is a lever on the right side that pops the keys up- or down for portability. The serial number dates its manufacture to July of 1923. After installing a new ribbon, it is typing again.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). I am a columnist on the topic of library technology. If I'm working on a book or an article, I'm at the computer. However, I use my typewriters to make poems, type-doodles, art, and to write snail mail letters. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
