Description:
By serial, this seems to be a Remington Portable #1 manufacturered in September 1923. Inoovative design in raising the hammers to use and lower to store, but this model does not have a carriage return -- you manually push it back to the left then turn the knob one click to roll it up a line. This definitely slows writing progress down. Other than pocking on the roller, the only issue my machine had was that the spring (located under the hammers) for the letter S had rusted through, so had to trim a new spring to size and it's a little off so the S doesn't always lay flat -- but this doesn't seem to affect how it works.

Got my first typewriter at age 4, a Tom Thumb. Got my first real typewriter at age 15, a Smith-Corona DeVille. Have been collecting typewriters since 2010 when I found a 1945 Smith-Corona Silent at an estate sale. Current count is around 12, half of them are in storage .
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
