1921 Remington Portable Serial # NM 1 14 7 3 1921 Remington Portable typewriter, Serial # NM 1 14 7 3 Davina Lobato's 1921 Remington Portable typewriter. 2023-10-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Davina Lobato: 1921 Remington Portable Serial # NM 1 14 7 3 The Remington Portable caught my eye leading me to buy more typewriters. It was my second after the Royal 10.
I loved how different it looked so I got it but it wasn’t working so I had to fix it myself. I replaced the knob that allows you to choose black or red as mine arrived broke. I smoothed out the platen. Smacked the metal body flat with a hammer so it wasn’t bent anymore. I added rubber cushions to replace the non existing ones. I sanded the smaller rollers. I re-hooked some keys. I sanded the key striker bars so it would move swiftly. I cleaned the gummy strikers so it writes smoothly without jams. I bent the bar for the side knob so it would move easily for when I want to type or lay it back flat to put away. I adjusted the thing that the key striker strikes through so it quit getting caught onto by the ribbon holder when typing.

I also added piano felt to the top and bottom so it is quieter when typing instead of hearing the clank against the metal that wasn’t covered. Also so when I put it away the lower half doesn’t get banged against by the keys chipping away more paint and it’s not loud like it was anymore. As this typewriter only had the top with some sound absorption not the bottom half.

I added red felt so it has some colour.

Pretty.
Pretty.

Last night I spent it typing on all the cards.
I like using the rotary phones I have in the house and when I have someone visiting who’s never used one they want to call somebody but they don’t remember the phone number so I’d have to grab my phone to tell them the numbers.
Now the Remington typewriter is helping me put all my contacts information down for my partner, their mother, and any guests who know our contacts.

I had to solder it after cutting it halfway so it would fit for this machine.

In its box.
You can see I replaced the scroll handle with a white plastic custom one I made. I wished the handle was never broke but I finally was able to pull the metal from it to place in it’s replacement which I was fickle about making but I’m glad I did so my fingers don’t hurt turning the platen.

I’m a creative individual. I recently started buying typewriters after seeing the Remington portable online. I found one but the Remington I bought was broken on arrival aka not as described with loads of problems. I just kept buying junkers to use parts from to fix my Remington and instead kept fixing the ones not meant to be fixed somehow thanks to the videos online posted by the Phoenix Typewriter. Now it’s an addiction I cannot seem to stop at the moment with an office full of typewriters. I have my fingers crossed I will use them to type a book and not just look at them.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Remington Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Remington Serial Number page and the Remington Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
