1921 Fox Sterling Serial # S12060 1921 Fox Sterling typewriter, Serial # S12060 Mark Schrad's 1921 Fox Sterling typewriter. 2026-04-07 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mark Schrad: 1921 Fox Sterling Serial # S12060 The Fox Typewriter Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan made fewer than 1000 of these cute little Sterling portables before going out of business. The previous iterations of their portable models were so close to the Corona 3 design that Fox was all but sued out of existence. This was a shame because their standard machines were the height of splendor, and their portables—of which this was among the rarest—were a bit unusual but pretty good as well.

This particular one had been sitting patiently on my workbench queue for over a year, and man, was it ever a mess. Seized up like a concrete block, snapped off a couple of screw heads, etc. etc. and the filthiest thing I’ve come across in a long while. This one came via a fellow collector in Baltimore, MD, who had originally spotted it "in the wild" somewhere in southern New Jersey. I got my hands on it in May of 2025.

Even with new feet, new drawband, new ribbon and a one will probably end-up as a shelf-sitter in my office due to its limitations in typing and functionality.
