Description:
another yard sale find that I had to ask for, and this uncovered two of them. This one seems pretty good. It has an cranked escapement drive to tension the carriage return spring.
I thought the carriage shifting was very heavy and then noticed that it is missing an assist spring that the other No. 3 has. And it is super accessible and of a size that I'm sure any hardware store has. Love these old ones!

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
