Update: Cleansing, lubricating and a used shoelace made her work again. For typing properly she still needs the "G"-slug.
The iconic Underwood No. 5, bought for € 5,00 on ebay. For almost half a century every standard had to look like this. She has a German typeface, is very rusty and was manufactured in May 1919.

Actually working with computers in my professional life I take the old mechanics as a compensation. I prefer machines manufactured before WWII, but I don't despise beautiful and good working typewriters from the fifties and sixties like e.g. the Olympia Splendid.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
