Description:
Found this old Standard flatbed 5 at the Seattle Goodwill. Seized up, filthy, with terrible rubber. Couldn't leave it to the key choppers so took it home and did a serious refurbish. New rubber everything from J J Short. Types... Ok. I'm having a little trouble with one of the feed rollers getting caught even the carriage moves. Still, a very pretty, and interesting machine. My oldest typewriter.
Edit: after dissecting a trashed Royal Electress from the late sixties I found the issue with the old Royal. The feeder roller was held in place with two leaf spring clips that had broken off ages ago. They were broken in the same place and looked like they were supposed to be that way. Only after seeing the same system in a typewriter fifty years newer did I realize what was missing. Machine now typing well.
