Description:
I got this 1912 Oliver 5 as part of a bulk "rescue" from a local keychopper in September, 2021. It needed quite a bit of work. But the platen was wrapped in some sort of paper, glued and taped on, yellowed with age. It turned out to be a Cromwell Typing Paper advert from 1951. As expected, the rubber platen underneath was cracked… but unexpectedly, red vulcanized rubber!

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Oliver 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Oliver Serial Number page and the Oliver 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
