1911 Underwood 5 Serial # 360269 1911 Underwood 5 typewriter, Serial # 360269 Brian Decker's 1911 Underwood 5 typewriter. 2026-02-14 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Brian Decker: 1911 Underwood 5 Serial # 360269 2026-02-14 Update: Added a new photo of the foot S/N #409280, for comparison with the body S/N #360269. Added an updated typing sample, and new detail photos of the type slugs, showing the "UR" foundry marks. This is a 10-CPI typeface, but clearly different from the more typical "UP" for Underwood Pica.

2025-12-13, Original Gallery Creation: The serial number on this Underwood 5, #360269, implies a manufacture date of January 1911. I purchased this machine, along with one of my two Woodstock Model 5 typewriters (# BW-40431 I believe) on eBay, on 25-26 October 2006, for $59.00 each, including shipping. I had the platen and feed rollers re-surfaced by Ames Supply Co. in April of 2008, but it still does not feed paper properly. It basically needs an overhaul. The typeface is 10 cpi, therefore Pica I suppose, but it seems to be a taller typeface than most of my other office standard machines in Pica.

Front low angle. Notice that the front frame has been re-sprayed on the left side, but not on the right. Bob Aubert re-touched the left when I visited him in 2008, but he left the right for me to do. He was so adept and quick, I wish he had just done both sides himself!

My interest in typewriters started in 1997, when I was in graduate school at the University of Georgia. I purchased and read Darryl Rehr's book, joined ETC, and started reaching out to known collectors. I had several email interchanges with Richard Polt dating from that period. I also bought some of my first machines from Bob Aubert, and visited him at his home twice. After marriage and relocation to New England, I continued visiting antique shops and eBay, until other priorities put my typewriter hobby on hiatus around 2008. I still have my collection of around 57 machines, and now I have a renewed interest in getting some of them in good working and cosmetic order.
