Description:
This Oliver 5 from 1911 came with base, cover, and manuals. I got it from a gentleman who was selling it on behalf of his grandfather. It turned out that the owner was a wonderful 98-year-old, and he told me that his own father had bought the machine! That was definitely worth a family road-trip to get it.
The machine will need some work to be usable but it is in good condition.
- As of October 2018, it is undergoing cleaning and restoration. It needs a new escapement wheel and a new spring.
- As of May 2020, it is cleaned, fixed, and restored, with a new escapement wheel, new spring, and new feet.
The base was originally in poor shape and I decided to restore it. The oak base turned out to be pretty nice, and I like the look of natural wood, so I sanded it down and used clear water-based matte polyurethane to protect it. The board screws, to which the cover attaches, were cold blued.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Oliver 5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Oliver Serial Number page and the Oliver 5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
