1908 Hammond 12 Serial # 134450 1908 Hammond 12 typewriter, Serial # 134450 Fumitaka Hayashi's 1908 Hammond 12 typewriter. 2026-10-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 1908 Hammond 12 Serial # 134450 A Hammond No. 12.

This was purchased from Mark Schrad. You can see his entry for the 'before' picture.

This was working when I bought it, so there wasn't much to do. The shuttle movinng piece would occasionally stick when you shifted, but I was able to fix that by very slightly bending back the shuttle locating pin.

The only thing I did to it was some work on the case. I patched up the bigger holes with strips of basswood. The only thing 'wrong' with this is that one of the ribbon spools is cracked. I hope to find on for a reasonable price to replace it.

Close inspection of the typeshuttle revealed a bunch of different numbers: 2, 5, and 7. They were all mirror image, so that they would read correctly in the mold. Comparing the actual typeface, I think the correct ID is #25, which is Large Roman, for the Universal keyboard, which matches what it appears to be.

The case is not original to the machine, as it is clearly labeled as a Multiplex. Ironically, my Multiplex has a case that is simply labeled "Hammond". I can't swap them, as this one is Universal (QWERTY), and the other one is the curved, Ideal keyboard. On the bright side, any future type shuttles I find in the future will be useful, as I have both this Universal keyboard and the other Ideal one.

Obtained from Mark Schrad, October 2026. It was a very nice visit, as I got to see at least a part of his collection.

#25, which is Large Roman for the Universal keyboard. There's a 7 at the bottom, I believe it's just a mold number, and not the ID# for the typeshuttle. Unlike later ones, the number is backwards - it would have read correctly on the mold.

The case. Labeled for a Multiplex, and with holes, which I have patched with basswood strips. It is also now missing the latches, as I used them to complete the better preserved case on my other Hammond.

#134450, which matches the number below the left ribbon mount.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
