Description:
Acquiring this 1903 Franz X. Wagner Underwood 4 was an interesting experience. It popped up in Lancaster, PA online for a reasonable price. I contacted the seller (which seemed like a ghost account, as it had no information and only one "friend"), and we agreed on a price. The next day, I found myself blocked. (My guess is that he looked at my political posts online.) So I contacted a typospherian friend in Lancaster, who picked it up on my behalf. I went to then pick it up on September 10, 2021, which was the day my new book was officially released. I spent that evening on a pleasant early-fall drive through Pennsylvania Dutch country--with horse-drawn carriages with headlights, as in one of the pictures--to pick up my prize, and was delighted to discover that, yes, it was an authentic Wagner. On the way home, I stopped by local booksellers to see if they had my new book in stock which, happily, they all did. It was a good day.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 4 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 4 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
