Description:
This machine is a late Caligraph 2. I am dating it to 1894 based on other models on TWDB, keeping in mind that dating Caligraphs doesn't seem to be an exact science.
It's obviously in a rough state with a lot of rust, but everything appears to be there. This is a candidate for a full disassembly, cleaning, repainting, and replacing. A big project!
The main spring under the machine appears broken, unsurprisingly. Three keys appear to have been replaced by wooden stubs.
UPDATE: Now dating it to 1893 based on a Facebook comment by Al Sumrall who says "So far it appears the last of the 2's was in the 38,000 range circa 1893.".

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Caligraph 2 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Caligraph Serial Number page and the Caligraph 2 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
