1 Points, Typewriter Hunter

I work in student support at a college of art and design when I'm not hunting for, refurbishing or teaching Typewriter 101. Mid-century portables are my main squeeze; I enjoy learning their different personalities as I amass a small arsenal of tools and skills to bring these incredible machines back to their former typing glory. I love -- as so many do -- that I am literally using a piece of history when I write with typewriters . The tactile and mechanistic virtues of the typewriter draw me in but I also appreciate how they seamlessly integrate into my life on a daily basis. I try to write on one every day. They are always ready to help me write (and focus on writing) no matter what kind of writing impulse strikes. There is something about the sensory connection that is really magical. The typosphere has provided me a connection with so many people, from the more mechanically minded to those paralyzed by perfectionism who learn to embrace the crappy first draft. We use typewriters because we appreciate the beauty of the flawed, and the glorious messiness that is writing.
