I didn’t set out to become a typewriter collector, but here I am. I was injected with this incurable virus on seeing the film California Typewriter and then buying my first typewriter via Craigslist the very next day (and with a lot of enabling from a typewriter-collecting friend). I love to use the few machines that I have that are in good working order to type letters, and I long to learn the fine art of typewriter repair so that I may experience more of the machines that I own as actual working typewriters instead of just the beautiful hunks of metal and plastic and promise that they are now. I love the stories that go with the machines and collect those as avidly as the typewriters themselves, and I prefer to buy machines locally if I can so that I may drive them home in safety (although I take a somewhat liberal view of the phrase locally and will absolutely cross state lines for a beautiful typewriter).
