1976 IBM Electronic Selectric Composer Serial # 30-5106771 1976 IBM Electronic Selectric Composer typewriter, Serial # 30-5106771 Erik Bruchez's 1976 IBM Electronic Selectric Composer typewriter. 2025-05-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erik Bruchez: 1976 IBM Electronic Selectric Composer Serial # 30-5106771 This second IBM Electronic Selectric Composer was for sale locally. It appears to have some life in it, but needs cleaning and servicing.

This is probably from 1976 or just after, based on the power supply manufacturing date. But, interestingly, the serial on this one is higher than that of my presumed 1978 machine (serial 30-5102780).

A couple of the integrated circuits, a power transistor, as well as a couple of other components on the planar (electronics board) have date codes of 1974. The planar itself has a number "0376", which likely indicates a date of March 1976 (or, possibly, third week of 1976).

Missing the IBM badge on top.

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
