19XX Simplex Special 1 Serial # NA 19XX Simplex Special 1 typewriter, Serial # NA Fumitaka Hayashi's 19XX Simplex Special 1 typewriter. 2026-09-16 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Fumitaka Hayashi: 19XX Simplex Special 1 Serial # NA A Simplex.

Unsure what to classify this as, as it's labeled Simplex, and Special, 1909, and "1". Most of these seem to be classified under Special 1.

It's in pretty rough shape. The box is on its last legs, and one of the inking pads has broken off. Otherwise, the simple mechanism seems to be intact. The platen knob indexes, and when you press the mechanism down, it automatically advances the 'carriage'.

The wood base seems really cheap.

I'm pretty sure this is not going to work very well, and I don't want to try and ink the one functional pad.

I don't know why, but the label has turned red and darkened.

The underside of the printing mechanism. One of the round ink pads had broken off. The ridges of the rack are engaged by a metal spring-loaded tab so that each pressing of a letter advances the paper one space.

Trying very hard to be more judicious in my acquisitions...

I like interesting typefaces. I like tinkering with my acquisitions to make them work.
