1991 ServiType (Nakajima) 80 Serial # 1Y303122U 1991 ServiType (Nakajima) 80 typewriter, Serial # 1Y303122U Kewin Sanfridsson's 1991 ServiType (Nakajima) 80 typewriter. 2023-10-04 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Kewin Sanfridsson: 1991 ServiType (Nakajima) 80 Serial # 1Y303122U Here we got 1 out of the 3 typewriters I picked up at a thrift store I hadn't been to for some time (they actually had 5 but I luckily I only bought 3 of them xD). This one is said "ServiTYPE 80" on it but after some research on the internet and disassembly to clean it up properly, I determined that this must be a Nakajima machine, a "AX 70" to be more specific. From what I have gathered this machine goes under quite few brands actually. If I have deciphered serial number correctly this specific machine must have been made in December of 1991, because it starts with a 1 in the serial number which means it was made in the first year of the decade. Then the Y tells me it was produced in December. Then I looked in the lookup table of “Nakajima All” for when the first known instance of a “AX 70” which was 1987 and then I also took into consideration when Nakajima moved the production to USA. Then I just put 1 + 1 together and assumed it must be December of 1991.

It has gotten quite yellowed under the years but what can we expect from our good old friend plastic. I thought it was made in China but got it totally wrong it was made in the USA.

It writes very well and works like a charm, but I think the paper trays hatch must be missing something because when I put it vertically in a standing position or when I carry it then it opens up. Maybe missing a latch or a spring? But I did not find any place where the plastic was broken at the top but two very small plastic parts was laying inside it though. One hatch/tab was broken at the bottom as well so I glued it back and almost glued two fingers together at the same time.

I hope you either found this helpful or amusing. Have a great day!

Hi my name is Kewin and I'm a 24 years old from Sweden. I have a few hobbies like drawing and playing guitar but I do also like myself some project here and there which is where my interest in typewriters fits in. I have always collected things through my life but I did not expect typewriters to be my next big passion in collecting. I started collecting typewriters in the beginning of 2022 and so far I have 80* of them (3 of which is currently disassembled) . I find it really enjoyable to pickup a typewriter at a thrift store/second hand and starting to clean it up and get it to a working condition to the best of my ability and knowledge. (Excuse all the dog hairs in my pictures, I do actually try to remove the hair before taking the pictures. xD) Cheers!
