This original electronic typewriter is part of a range of three machines produced by a decading Olivetti, created as "gadgets" for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, and is based on the PT505 model (Italia '90/2). The other two (Italia '90/1 and Italia '90/3 respectively) are based on the manual Dora and Lettera 35 models. Much like the Fiat Panda "Italia '90" based on the 750 FIRE version created in the same spirit—a very spartan and highly economical car at the time—the Olivetti Italia '90 models are also three cheap and simple typewriters. While they are appealing on one hand for their light blue color (the color of our national team), on the other they evoke a mix of tenderness and pity seeing devices that once set Olivetti apart worldwide for quality, precision, and performance reduced to mere gadgets.

Nevertheless, it retains a pleasant design—the same as the PT505, which after all came from the pencil of Mario Bellini. It is elegant and less boxy than the still-valid ET Personal 55, enhanced by a color that breaks away from the usual gray. As with all portable electronic Olivettis of that era, there isn't a proper case. The keyboard cover, the foldable paper support, the closed compartment (strangely intact) housing the power cord, and the front handle allow it to be carried around like a briefcase—a simple and brilliant solution, aided by its light weight.

Even in its usage, it reflects the portable electronic typewriters of the time. It is slow on the carriage return (you can start typing the next line while it returns; the machine saves it in memory and "catches up" to the operator), lacks features like automatic return and bold text typical of later models, has no display, and the typing action happens practically right in front of the platen, directly under the user's gaze, making it unergonomic. The ribbon is the classic Ondacart cartridge, surprisingly still in production today, but only in the correctable carbon-film version: it is expensive and doesn't last long. Fortunately, I have a couple of old compatible nylon cartridges that allow me to get more use out of it.

This particular unit is in surprisingly good condition, considering these machines were built on a budget (in Singapore, the Singapore of 1990) using fragile plastics; broken clips and hinges were a common occurrence. Only the print mechanism cover is slightly faded, somewhat like white plastics that turn yellow; I'll do a bit of retrobrighting. Otherwise, it is fully functional. I'm not posting a print test simply because the daisy wheel is the classic Olivetti Eletto.
The most curious part is by far the "Lega Nord" sticker from the previous owner. It representes the separatist party in Northern Italy and is quite strange in a machine called "Italia '90" which would represent my country's unity during the World Championship.

Questa originale macchina per scrivere elettronica fa parte della gamma di tre macchine realizzata da una Olivetti con gli anni contati contati come "gadget" in occasione dei Mondiali di calcio in Italia del 1990 ed è basata sul modello PT505 (Italia '90/2). Gli altri due (rispettivamente Italia '90/1 e Italia '90/3) sono basati sui modelli manuali Dora e Lettera 35. Al pari della Fiat Panda "Italia '90" realizzata sulla base della 750 FIRE, automobile ai tempi molto spartana ed economicissima, con lo stesso spirito anche le Olivetti Italia 90 sono tre macchine per scrivere economiche e semplici, se da un lato accattivanti per il colore azzurro (quello della nostra Nazionale) da un altro suscitano un misto di tenerezza e pena per vedere ridotti a meri gadget dei dispositivi che un tempo distinguevano Olivetti a livello mondiale per qualità, precisione e prestazioni.
Ne rimane comunque una linea piacevole, uscita pur sempre dalla matita di Mario Bellini: elegante e meno squadrata della pur sempre valida ET Personal 55, valorizzata da una tinta differente dal solito grigio. Come in tutte le Olivetti elettroniche portatili di allora non c'è una custodia vera e propria: il coperchio della tastiera, il poggiacarta richiudibile, lo sportellino chiuso (stranamente integro) per alloggiare il cavo di alimentazione e la maniglia sul davanti consentono di portarla con sé come una valigetta, una soluzione semplice e geniale, complice il peso ridotto.
Anche nell'utilizzo rispecchia le portatili elettroniche dell'epoca: lenta nel ritorno a capo (si può cominciare a scrivere la riga successiva durante il ritorno: la macchina la salva in memoria e "raggiunge" l'operatore), mancante di funzioni come il ritorno automatico e il grassetto tipiche di modelli successivi, è priva di display e la battuta è realizzata praticamente di fronte al rullo, sotto lo sguardo di chi scrive, rendendola antiergonomica. Il nastro è la classica cartuccia Ondacart, tutt'ora sorprendentemente prodotta, ma solo in versione carbografica correggibile: è costosa e dura poco. Fortunatamente ho un paio di vecchie cartucce in nylon compatibili con cui posso sfruttarla meglio.
Questo esemplare è in condizioni sorprendentemente buone, dal momento che queste macchine erano realizzate (a Singapore, la Singapore del 1990) in economia, con plastiche fragili; gancetti e cerniere rotti erano all'ordine del giorno. Solo il coperchio del gruppo stampa è leggermente sbiadito, un po' come le plastiche bianche che ingialliscono; farò un po' di retrobrighting. Per il resto funziona interamente, non pubblico una prova di stampa solo perché la margherita è la classica Eletto Olivetti.
La parte più curiosa rimane per certo lo sticker della Lega Nord su una macchina che dovrebbe rappresentare l'unità nazionale dei tifosi in occasione dei mondiali. Tante idee ben confuse.
