Description:
I recently acquired an Underwood 378 typewriter, primarily to harvest parts in support of restoring my cherished Olivetti Lettera 32. My goal was to source original body screws and hardware, metal ribbon spools, and most importantly, a functional mainspring. While the machine did provide several useful components, I was disappointed to find that the mainspringâmy most critical needâwas broken as well.
It also had a cryptic message taped underneath the cover. I assume those are lucky numbers. Obviously not enough to win the jackpot, but could be a good start.
Despite the setback, the 378 has found new purpose. Given its near-identical mechanical architecture to the Lettera 32 beneath the plastic casing, it will now serve as my hands-on learning tool for understanding and practicing repairs. In line with Chris Aldrich's recommendation that every typewriter enthusiast should have a "naked machine," I plan to keep it stripped downâan honest, open view of the mechanics beneath the surface. The search for a working mainspring continues. Now I need TWO!

I'm a typewriter hunter and collector with a passion for European machines - especially the iconic, midcentury designs of Olivetti. I'm drawn to their perfect balance of form and function: sleek lines, compact practicality, and a design language that reflects an era of thoughtful innovation. What began as a casual interest has evolved into a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and usability of these machines. From the minimalist beauty of the Lettera 22 to the precision of German-built models, I seek out typewriters that embody both aesthetic legacy and practical reliability - tools that still have a voice in the modern world. My favorite is Lettera 32.
