198X Smith Corona Coronamatic Coronet XL Serial # 6LEG 137750H 198X Smith Corona Coronamatic Coronet XL typewriter, Serial # 6LEG 137750H James Grooms's 198X Smith Corona Coronamatic Coronet XL typewriter. 2024-11-10 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 198X Smith Corona Coronamatic Coronet XL Serial # 6LEG 137750H Essentially a budget version of the 2200. No paper injector, although not all 2200s have them, and no ON/OFF light. Although I see some in the gallery that have a light. Maybe the lack of a half space key was the biggie? I don't have a 2200 to look at, but they are pretty close. This was generally $30-50 less than a 2200.

Ad research shows they came out in 1978, whereas the 2200 was a new for 73 model. A revival of the Coronet name shows how important those models were to S-C. By 1985 the ads come to an end. I think this has the distinction of being the last of the typebars that S-C offered. A remarkable run from 1956 to 1985 at almost 30 years. This, the 2100/2200 and 2500 are fine typewriters. And with a carbon ribbon, they put out a high quality impression. They are often mistaken for the budget Electra XT, Enterprise, Correction XT, etc.

This example, I believe, had a quality control issue and was parked. The motor would not turn without effort and sometimes failed to spin fast enough to engage the clutch. After cleaning didn't fix it, there wasn't much to clean, I loosed the lock collar and gave the shaft a little bit of end play and away we go. There was also no pivot screw on tab set linkage. So considering there was hardly any debris in the machine and no scuffs/wear on the key area, that's my theory.

The carbon ribbon was worth $10 all by itself. If you find them, they have this use indicator. They almost always work if they are near full like this one is.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
