Description:
Another machine I initially dismissed. This was one of two in the antiques shop and when I went back a week later, the more expensive one had gone. This one was so cheap, I thought I might as well rescue it.
There is no denying that this is a 'cheap and cheerful' typewriter built down to a price to make it widely available to the masses. It's light and tinny and the typeface isn't the best I've seen, however, it's very portable due to its small size and light weight, so if I want to just type a quick note, this is often my 'go to' choice.
There are some issues with the levers at the extreme right-hand side as they don't always strike cleanly and sometimes get caught in the guide and don't seat down correctly. However, it is a machine of it's time and therefore deserves a place in my collection.
I believe that the 'Silverette' was sold under a number of names and badges so it is very common.

Retired Air Traffic Controller. Got my first typewriter from Santa when I was about 8 years old and woke my parents up at 3am as I just had to try it out when I woke up! Have had an old Imperial 58 in the family for longer than I can remember. A computer geek, but I just love the mechanics of typewriters and have started to collect a few more to keep the Imperial company!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Silver Reed Silverette on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Silver Reed Serial Number page and the Silver Reed Silverette By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
